I'm not convinced ethanol is the problem, although people blame it for everything. Exactly the same problem happened with Hinckley Triumph Tigers (the "Girly" model) in the early to mid 2000s before ethanol was widely used. I believe the plastic tanks for those bikes (I had one and loved it) were made in Italy.

I think it's more a case that they distort when off the bike due to the weight especially if they have fuel in them.

Despite all the stories I've never had ethanol problems with any of my "classics" - I can leave them in the garage for 6 months with fuel in the tank and they'll start first kick on that when I drag them out.

As much as I hate to disagree with a fellow Guzzi rider, I've had 3 plastic tanks replaced under waranty for the same fault and they're all the bloody same! Why do you think all V7 models now come with metal tanks?
V7 Classic Black and gold was the best. But green & black was nice too. Now blue is in!

My Gas Gas trials bike tank is ok, but I know of 3 others that have expanded enough to be unusable, only by chance I live near a BP garage, wonder if theirs has less ethanol.

My Norge tank has definitely not distorted, it has expanded. The rear bolt no longer fits and at the same time the front fork yokes now hit the front of the tank at full lock, had to file about 1/4 inch off to clear.

Perhaps Ian would tell us which Moto Guzzi he has as I don't see it listed and all his comments seem to reference old British iron?

It appears that the chromium plated plastic tanks had problems.  I saw one, and assumed that there was no give in the metal plating, so it cracked and then peeled.
