During routine servicing on my recently acquired V7 Special, I noticed that the generator belt was as tight as a bow string, far too tight for what is required of it. Concerned about bearing life at either end, I looked into a replacement.
After checking with the usual parts retailers and the actual belt lengths, it seemed that they also would be on the tight side. As the esteemed Mr Richardson observes, the belt run is very short and it locates on each pulley for a for full 180 degrees, it doesn't need a huge amount of tension. Some adjustment can be made changing the shims between the crank pulley halves, but this also affects the seating of the belt on the pulley which can lead to premature wear or worse if it's not running correctly. The original belt is specced as a Z28. Eventually I sourced a Z28.5 belt which fits the bill very well. There is now a lot less tension on the belt, and after a 90 mile run at the weekend all appears to be OK.

Run it as slack as you dare, just so that it doesn't flap about so much that it touches the inside of the housing. You can see what it's doing with the front cover off. Don't put your fingers in!

Yes, definitely check the tension with the engine stopped!
