Hi All,
I live in Melbourne, Oz, and am planning the purchase of a new V7 Special. My last couple of bikes have been radically different (883 Sporty with mods, followed by KTM 690R Duke which is my current ride). As I am careening RAPIDLY into my 60s (that's what you do when you ride a Duke) I realise I need to slow down and enjoy the ride - hence the V7, which is a damn good looking bike. So, what are the pros and cons? The feeling I get is that cold starts and mapping problems have been issues, but otherwise it's a pretty reliable and enjoyable bike. Comments very welcome, and don't hold my choice of motorcycles against me! Coz I also own a '65 BSA Hornet :) AndyH

Go to Peter Stevens and tell him what you want.
And tell them if you have any bother, cold starts mapping etc their collective heads will be rammed up their collective derriere's. You might have to explain derriere so I'd just say arse. Gud day. Chips. |

If you're lucky then Oz versions won't be strangled by the wee-wee weak EU fuel map After 2 years with a V7 II I'd say... Pro's: Really engaging bike to ride, lots of character, handles nicely, great on twisty B-roads, reliable, well finished, looks great. It's a bike you can ride all day and still want more. Con's: 1) Too weak fuelling at low throttle (fixable by modifying lambda sensor signals) 2) Shockingly firm compression damping (take weight through the pegs and it's OK, or fit adjustable dampers). 3) Pegs are little high if you're long in the leg (but there's a guy in the States does lowered pegs, and/or you could re-foam the seat). 4) Sometimes you'll wish it had another 10bhp (or just relax and stop trying to ride it like a sportsbike racer). 5) You'll frequently be delayed by random people admiring your bike and telling you all about the Guzzi's they've owned/lusted after. I was warned about this when I bought mine and thought it was salesman talk, but actually it's true... Does that help make up your mind? Are you thinking V7 II or V7 III? Either way I don't think you'll regret it. Bella Moto!

Moto Pete pretty much sums it up for me. Only a numb bum gets me off my mine at the end of a long day in the saddle. Enjoy.

Hey, thanks motopete,
Your observations are much appreciated... The pros & cons are very useful and YEP, they DO help me make up my mind! I'm checking out the recently arrived V7 III this weekend at the Melbourne dealership, and you never know, they may have a V7 II priced to sell I suspect I would be happy with either, but are there any significant differences between the new and the superseded models?

You're welcome Andy
I've not seen a V7 IIi over here yet, but from what I've read: New engine top-end to cope with lean burn running for Euro 4 A bit more power (+4BHP!!) Better dampers, but still not adjustable Stiffened headstock and slightly tweaked geometry to make it a bit more agile (although I quite like the way the V7 II starts to wallow slightly when pushed, it's sort of warning you not to go too much further...) Bigger clutch - presumably not to cope with the massive increase in power I find the V7 II is fine if adjusted properly New side panels and different paint scheme. It's personal taste, but from the photo's I prefer the look of the V7 II. Might look better in the metal though Tweaked footpegs and seat New instruments with integrated tell-tales, plus some fancy option to link the bike to a smartphone Must be aimed at the young and trendy generation. I'm an old fart and happy with a speedo, tacho, basic tell tales. What more do you need? ++£/$, and I thought the V7 II was expensive! |
