Recently did a 700 mile run on my Cali with sidecar over 3 days.300 miles day one.100 miles day two and 300 miles day three.Stopped 10 miles from home for a last peaceful fag and the bugger wouldn't start...battery was flat.
A push-start got it going without too much effort.
Noticed that I had been running on full headlights.
Last 30 miles or so in traffic at lowish rpms.
Ran sweetly otherwise.
Full beam to blame for discharge of battery?
No accessories drawing on system except additional two position lights on sidecar.
Battery was fairly recent wet cell of 33 amp capacity.
Took a good while to recharge on my Aldi trickle charger!

Sounds as if the charging system isn't perfect. Check the earth on the regulator. Also check the connector between the alternator and rec/reg.

You said headlights - plural. Have you got more than one?

I was going to ask that. Big smile

Any chance you can put a Voltmeter on it, compare what it is idling versus revving?

Tank off and a good squirt of degreaser into three block connectors on side of upper frame. Removed and cleaned earth connector at regulator/rectifier under headstock at front of frame.Loads of Vaseline applied.Running noticeably better on tick-over.....!

Location guidance on other earths appreciated....as suggested, this seems to have a noticeable difference.

Read somewhere that electronic tach on 1100i Calis can be brought back to life by re-earthing. Anyone got a location for original earth for this?

Any tips about dismantling and removing tach for inspection welcome. It is attached to the central visual display at two points, could be a push fit but don't want to force it.
Breaking things comes easily to me.

On the older bike I found a veritable cluster of earths under the tank on the right as sat on the bike up near the headstock ....if it is running the Ducati style regulator/rectifier always worth putting a 2nd earth strap so both of the bolts holding it have an earth .....

Yes, and this part of frame needs to be bare metal shiny clean i.e. scraped / filed / emery papered.

There is another earth point on the Tonti frame which is lefthand side, what was on the old models the lower mounting "popper" stud for the side panel; the regulator etc. uses this. Ditto needs be shiny clean at this point.

For the rectifier I moved its earth wire to battery negative terminal direct, as the original connection's bolt also mounts the battery side rubber so by definition is never tight enough. (Else rubber would be crushed.) I mean FFS ...

Substantial earth below left hand side casing near starting motor.cleaned this up, now starting without throttle or "choke". Ticking over much stronger. Big spin shortly . Will report further. Many thanks.....
