I have a 1996 California 1100i - it has decided not to start, it turns over ok, but there is no spark and the fuel pump does not seem to be priming. However after about a minute the pump will run for a short while and the rev counter goes up to app 7k at the same time, and I suspect it is returning fuel to the tank.

I have cleaned all the electrical connectors I can find, changed the relays and fuses, changed the two sensors on the fly wheel and camshaft, checked the kill switch and the side stand switch, all the relays do seem to be clicking as thy should....and still the thing wont start .....any Ideas.....Mad....Ian

Very strange. I would have thought that if any of the interlocks (sidestand, kill switch, relays etc) had failed it wouldn't turn over. Cant think what would cause the delay on the pump prime and the erratic rev counter. Its got me stumped, all I can think off is pulling all the connectors apart one-by-one and looking for signs of corrosion/ bad connections. Hopefully its nothing to serious like a failed ECU.

I'm sure someone who is good with electrics will be along with some more logical fault finding suggestions!

Good luck.

had this happen on my V11 le mans it was a bad connection to the neutral switch instead of the spade terminal on the old V1000 it used a female spade on the wire that fits around a brass button, contact cleaner and crimping it up cured it I also found the clutch micro switch fitted in the lever needed contact cleaner now n again

My 2c if any help to anyone, recently bought Cali 1100i, no spark due to fouled plugs. Fitted new plugs and same happened. What I found, water in the fuel, possibly due to condensation over years of previous owner, and unknown, also the fuel filter in the tank (a PIA to change)don't think ever had been done.Possible stale gas as well, flushed tank, fitted new filter, bike started but rough. Problem found was the spark plug caps were had it( something easy to miss),replaced them and bike runs like a dream.
