I thought I should update you all on this.
I checked all fuel filters, lines and taps, went through all the wiring and could find nothing wrong. I filled the tank with fuel and then let it drain again into a can to see if the flow dropped. All seemed fine. Then... The tank was sitting on my bench in the sun and, when I undid the fuel filler, it "exhaled". So, it seems my first suspicions of a blocked filler cap vent looked the likely answer again. I've never fully understood what's supposed to happen with the police-type cap. I can clearly see two vent holes outside the rubber seal but can't see any inside. Despite this it's worked fine for over a year to now. I dealt with this by drilling a 2mm hole in the cap, where I would have expected to find one, and tested it by squirting WD40 into the new hole and watching it come out of t'other ones. I did order a replacement ignition coil but never got to fit it. It was damaged and had to go back. There has been no sign of its replacement yet. With one thing and another, I haven't been able to take the bike out till this afternoon when I managed to fit in a 55 mile run. Everything went as it should so the problem looks like it's sorted. Time will tell. |

Particularly nice when it's an inexpensive repair.

it is the ethanol it leaves that yellow varnish like deposit and clogs the breathers Had it happen on the V1000 this Ethanol in fuel is bloody awful I wonder how long it will take before they find out it causes more issues than it solves, as they have done with Diesel !!!!!

Vacum in the tank, if you fill it up and drain it back into a fuel can, it will look fine as it has a chance to gulg as if you turn a bottle of water upside down, cause your petrol doesn't drain that fast when running through the carbs what looks ok may give you a false positive.

Modern petrol is made for EFI, so the answer is no, so the powers that be don't give a toss about what happens to carbs in fact if you were to push the issue they'll probably ask why haven't you scrapped them yet, you ought to be using EFI. |

I thought i might resurrect this thread. My LM1 has been cutting out on one cylinder from time to time, once every 70 - 100 miles or so. Then after a short rest all is well again. Having scoured this site and the Laverda owners side i have taken the fuel taps off the tank and there was a lot of flakes of brown varnish type material clogging the gauze tap filters. I have swilled petrol round the tank and got a lot out but there is still quite a bit in there. I can hear it rattling around. i have two questions.
1. is there any way of dissolving this stuff ? 2. just in case the breather is blocked in the fuel tank lid, how do I check the lid for a blockage and unblock it ? Thanks guys

Are you able to empty the petrol as must as possible and then let the tank dry as best you can.
Then vacuum the bits of flaky stuff out by attaching a bit of garden hose to your vacuum cleaner pipe with gaffer tape. Or some such method The old trick was to insert a counted number of pebbles or nuts into the tank and shake vigorously then flush out. Shaken not stirred

Pebbles certainly work with a vacuum afterwards.
