Vandals have turned roadside radar to face a railway line A mobile speed trap by the roadside in Orsan, Gard no longer flashes speeding cars but trains - after vandals turned it to face a railway track parallel to the road. The radar is still intact but it remains unclear whether any speeding fines for excessive train speed through nearby Bagnols-sur-Cèze will be sent to the SNCF. This is unlikely, as all speeding tickets are supposed to be authorised by police officers working in the Centre National de Traitement for road offences in Rennes – with software scanning each photo for a number plate. However, with 55,000 photos being treated each day... Speed limits in France are as follows: 130kph on the autoroute, 110kph on a two-way road separated by a central reservation (un terre-plein central), 90kph on a main road and 50kph in built-up areas. Penalties for breaking the limit vary and depend on the road and speed. Break the limit in a 50kph zone and you could face a €45 fine if you exceed the limit by less than 20kph – or a €90 if you break the limit by more than 20kph. The €45 fine rises to €68 if not paid in 15 days and €180 if not paid in 45 days. The €90 fine can rise to €135 and €375. An extract from my Connection newspaper, just for info. |

I should add that the 50kph restriction in built-up area's is a bit vague as there are more and more 30 and even 20kph zones within and it's not always clear where one ends and begins

Those speed limits reduce in wet weather, though how wet it has to be remains a mystery.
Also in France you have to carry your driving licence with you at all times (when driving) and if caught at a certain figure above the posted limit, the police can immediately relieve you of it. There was a case of a Brit biker got caught, refused to pay fine and was slung in clink. Moral of that story - when in a hole it pays to stop digging.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a crit d’air for an historic bike?
I’d like to take the LeMans to Mandello in September, maybe come back via Le Mans (it’s got to be worth the photo) and I’d rather pay four euro now than 130 later. I speak good French and would stand a better than evens chance of blagging my way out, but I’d still rather pay up front. The website’s not having any of it. Any info from Historic vehicle or Owners’ clubs en France?

First question, why do you think you need one? You only need one for certain days in some city centres.
Just drove through Le Man's yesterday, saw no reference to that posted anywhere.

I applied for my Covid Passport yesterday, what a palaver !! Having gone through the standard electronic application I was then required to prove my identity by sending a photograph of my driving licence or passport. Having done that they then sent me a four digit code which I had to write down on a sheet of A4 in large figures and send them a video of me holding up the written code. My wife had to do none of the photographic part just a simple application for her Covid Passport. I am told that the rigmarole I had to go through is a procedure randomly used in maybe one in a hundred applications. Caroline will never get an Oscar for cinematography, it took her three attempts to get the video right ! |

I got mine easily online but my wife couldn't. Just ring 119 and ask for one. They send it without all that to your address registered with your GP. Be aware that the printed pass only valid for a month.
I always print it out before travelling, far easier to hand over a bit of paper than rummage in your phone for it.

Yes I have a printed one but decided to get an electronic one when I realised that the printed version lasted only a month. Apparently the electronic version automatically updates.

I have the NHS app on my phone and simply find & update my pass at the start of a trip. I then screenshot it, so it’s in “photos” and takes no time at all to find when requested. Much easier than having bits of paper. (It does not update automatically, you have to tell it to, but it takes seconds).
I wanted the Crit Air because the ZPA zones are large, and can be imposed at short notice, if it’s possible to get a cert, it might not be necessary to change one’s travel plans. This from the RAC

Read the english version of the official French site for the best information. Language selectable at top of page. There is a map on that page showing the areas involved. Le Mans is not included. But they do give a list which includes rouen it seems. Les villes concernées par les ZFE-mDes zones à faibles émissions ont été mises en place dans 8 agglomérations :
