Can someone clarify something for me, please.I' still looking at alternative voltage regulators for the Loops and found this site from the USA.
http://dynamoregulator.com/?gclid=CKTEi-Wi_NMCFYcW0wod5u8Dug These people manufacture solid state regulators for a variety of vehicles including one which would suit the Loops, with adjustable output. They state that AGM batteries require a lower rate if charge than a conventional battery does.I've read including on these very pages that the opposite is true.Who's right?? Oddysey state that their AGM batteries require a minimum charge rate of 2 Amps. However that's really academic when thinking of a dynamo or alternator.
The charging voltage is all you can adjust and I have always found this source of information to be good. As with all gelled and sealed units, AGM batteries are sensitive to overcharging. A charge to 2.40V/cell (and higher) is fine; however, the float charge should be reduced to between 2.25 and 2.30V/cell (summer temperatures may require lower voltages). Automotive charging systems for flooded lead acid often have a fixed float voltage setting of 14.40V (2.40V/cell); a direct replacement with a sealed unit could overcharge the battery on a long drive.

Looking elsewhere it seems that float charging (which is what the generator does) should be at 2.3v per cell, ie. about 14V.

Thanks for that Brian. So it appears that the AGM requires a lower voltage to maintain it on the bike not higher as I had thought.
Confusing it is, yes? |

Did you try Michael who runs this company over here Dave? I bought one of his regulators for my old Lodola, as I couldn't find a devent 6 volt regulator for it. Works very well, when the rest of the bike decides to work too..

Thanks Adam.I hadn't seen that site. I'm beginning to realise that I've possibly been on a wild goose chase with this whole subject.
There was possibly nothing wrong with my original regulator in the first place. I now think it was a failing battery which caused the problem. When I tested the generator output I saw it as being too low for an AGM battery but it transpires that my belief was wrong, It was arguably too high and could even have shortened the life of the battery. Every day's a school day. |

Towzatronics does a solid state adjustable VR 14.2 for agm 13.8 for lead acid I believe

Is that for a dynamo rather than an alternator? As you may have seen in my post Ken.The information I have gleaned from the net suggests that AGM's require a lower rate of charge, not higher. What say you?
