While waiting for my new  regulator to arrive I decided to give the Ambo the once over and lucky I did as I found numerous loose fastners.
I also noticed the left hand cylinder is running cooler (80 degrees less on my heat gun pointed at the exhaust at the head exit) than the right at idle and puffs a little black smoke when I crack the throttle but cleans up once the revs rise.
It has new Gilardoni piston/cylinders so I doubt it is due to low compression.
I assume it is running a bit rich at idle on that cylinder so will have a look at the carbs next week.

I also noticed the distributor cap retaining spring on one side is home made and allows the cap to move around a small amount. The bike seems to run fine like this but I was wondering if this might cause the spark to be weak or erratic as I can hear a slight miss in the left hand cylinder at idle?

Rich mixture will make it run cooler as far as I know.

There's only 1 set of points in the distributor so any timing error would affect both sides.

Sounds like it needs a good baseline tune-up - set tappets, set timing, set mixture and synchronise carbs.

Don't be tempted to try to get the mixture screw settings the same number of turns out on both carb's.According to the manual, the right side runs a little richer than the left.I presume this is to compensate for the asymmetry of the inlet tracts.
