Frozennorth, I'm lucky enough to have had a '95 1100 Sport from new so can speak from experience. First, they are slow to warm up properly from new compared to modern stuff. I don't expect mine to run without spitting back through the carbs even now for at least 10 miles and not to run at 100% for 15 or so. I'm don't mean to sound big or anything but they like to be ridden hard with the revs up! Second, after much experimentation and talks with Amadeo at Raceco I junked the airbox and fitted the biggest K&N's I could find, then went 50/3 slider/throttle valve, 165 mains, 55 idles, K27 needles which helped but also tried 160/60's on the way. Third, the factory tappet settings are also very tight which doesn't help. Again Amadeo recommends 8thou in 10thou ex which is what I run mine (.1 - .15mm standard) The old girl doesn't run completely clean at about 2500 - 3000 but its much better than the awful flatspot that used to be there up to 3500... You will have to balance and tune the carbs to your bikes liking to get the best out of her. Each is slightly different and so will be your riding style. The lean mixture and airbox are the main culprits in getting it to run well I could go on... Fluff

An update on this; I finally got a couple of days to spend on the bike, and decided to try my nice new ultrasonic cleaner.
So, carbs off, stripped down, and 30 minutes each in the cleaner at 60 degrees C; then dried off / blown through / inspected / reassembled. A fair bit of muck came out which wasn't visually apparent before they went in...... Anyway, back on bike, warmed up and then balanced with mercury u - tube manometer; running much nicer but still a bit "spitty". Needles raised one notch, better! - nows runs pretty good on road, but sometimes a wee spit on idle. So, mixture screws out a wee bit at a time, at 3 turns out seems good, bike seems much happier all round: I think I'll leave it for a while now & see how it goes..... just in time for Summer! All jets, needles etc are standard, standard airbox & filter etc; I haven't changed anything but settings. |

I made it myself years ago; not hard to do, but getting hold of mercury nowadays might be an issue, don't know how available it would be.
Just a u - tube made from plastic tubing, about 18" high and filled half way with mercury. Important to have an inch or so of water or paraffin sitting on top of the mercury, stops it evaporating & giving you mad hatter syndrome....... Connect to carbs using flexible plastic tubing, I used fish tank tubing and a couple of valves to damp pulses; and you need to make adaptors to fit your carbs: I make mine from brass rod, turned and threaded to suit. I've been using it for years, works a treat; nothing to go wrong or out of calibration. |

Instructions for making a safer manometer with items readily available are in the FAQ section. Water, or in my case ATF which is red is actually more accurate than mercury too in that you can easily see very small changes.

Hah! I was wondering if this was the Sport 1100 I bought last year but obviously not.
Thats now been in for 13 weeks for tuning. Which is ****ing insane. Apparently its running well, making 80hp, and hes waiting for the K29 needle to finish the job. I'll let you know my settings when (if!) I get it back. Are you running the large centre collector or straight through? I have large K&N pod filters, straight through midpipes, MTC open endcans. |
