Not sure if you can do that on a new V7, or is advisable, I assume that's what Raphael's got. I've still got an old gearbox oil bottle, 500cc, one of those with the long neck for getting into small filler holes especially in cramped spaces e.g. under a car, that kind of thing is very handy. Sit on the bike so it's upright (or on mainstand) gets you a much better angle into the engine dipstick filler. (The V7 has to have a mainstand of course, or else sit on it) |

I've often wondered why that isn't standard on all models. They all have plastic covers on the rocker covers so any filler could easily be concealed. Some models are almost impossible to top up with the existing setup. What's the disadvantage?

Scrotes putting foreign matter into it! I've had it happen with an unlocked petrol cap. OK was only a milk bottle top, and which didn't come to light until much later, as you might imagine. Also, just nicking it – it's begging to be "messed with" – happened to my dad with his old Riley, petrol cap again was just a chromed screw-on job. Still not sure if it was genuinely coveted or just pure vandalism. |

As I said, they mostly have a plastic cover which is bolted on, so not straightforward to just open the filler.

That is correct. As a former K1200LT owner I can also tell you they worked great. But using a flexible screw on funnel/pipe thing (like a drinking straw, but designed for motor oil) works even better. It doesn't take up too much space and you can find it at most auto parts stores. |
