Hi all
Loving and learning my Guzzi G5.
Latest development is a knock from front forks.
It seems to be on the left fork as you sit on the bike and is most noticeable when dropping down from a speed bump.
Since owning the bike I have replaced the fork tubes...bad rust where headlamp supports are....fitted new steering head bearings (from Gutsibits) and also the top fork upper cap, one of which was broken in the fork tube !
So my thinking is its the fork shock absorber.
Any thoughts before I splash out my cash ?

Thanks Phil

Probably knackered cartridges and/or springs. They're not brilliant when brand new..

yeah the sealed damper units are almost certainly shot. I got replacements from MotoMecca. They're cheaper now than they were in 1980 Have you got lubricating oil in the forks?

Yes, ATF if memory serves, not much needed.

If it's a knock I would check that my new steering head bearings need adjusting again now they have settled down

Have new head races just been fitted? Yes, deffo first thing to check, then forks. The forks on my S3 although all fine mechanically still knock occassionally on a pothole or similar. In fact, I think soon I'll put some different springs and cartridges in, they're the weakest part of these older big Guzzis.

Check they are actually fitted at the top when I got the V1000 the top of the forks had holes ie no bolts in them I only rode it 1/4 mile it knocked read manual the "holes" should have had bolts in to fit to the inner tops, fitted allen head bolts, never a problem since the ATF fluid just gives lube to the outside of the tubes. Think of them like larger rear shocks inside the forks , when I serviced mine , undid the bottom 'ole what came out was gunge and water!!!! ...this was prior to it going on road properly and after I fitted the top bolts and filled it with ATF any subsequent draining has resulted in ATF fluid only , first couple of times it was a bit brownish , from contamination I guess, The dampers have performed faultlessly for the last 26 yrs ..... brilliant system ....
