I was working on the T5 to check it over for MOT, hasnt been used since i got the Norge in May

Started it up and noticed the charging light was staying on. Checked the battery with a meter - definately charging ok. Switched bike off and back on - no charging light bust as soon as i started it up charging light came on.

What first to check ?

Is it a Bosch alternator Jim? With brushes and slip rings?

What voltage did you get at the battery when the engine was running?

Its a bosch,oringinal from 1986, getting 12.4 at tickover rising to 13.8 at 2000rpm

The light is very low at tickover, brightens up when revving and real bright ifbyou put the brake on

Check all connections on the rectifier are good and clean, sounds like an earth connection is poor.

Also look at brushes and slip rings, and alternator connectors. Yeah yeah I know how it looks like it's charging BUT .....

Edit: a clue is in the fact that you left it for a while, so suspect oxidised connector(s) etc.

All clean and tight in the alternator. When engine is running if i pull handbrake and foot on fbrake at same time, neutral light comes on and volt gauge starts working ?

Ah sounds more like you got a bad earth connection for the instruments area?

Just sorted a starting issue on the Norge by soldering a crimped joint.
