Appendix: on later boxes the hose was moved rearward to a new separate metal stub tube, but is just open if memory is correct, no valve of any sort. But same again the hose is tied up alongside battery.

What you describe mike is certainly the case on the loops and I think the Tonti's too.No need for a ball in the gearbox breather. The pipe should be pointing upwards but I turn the last little bit downwards to avoid the ingress of water.

Hi Mike
my breather is just above the starter motor, the pipe I have runs down next to engine breather.
I've tried looking at various exploded diagrams but they don't show the spring either !

Yes, on my '75 S3, breather tube goes on 'nozzle' on the nut that bolts in top of the spring, later boxes it was moved to the cover I think.

Can anyone else confirm what I'm on about, memory is vague... ?

The hose should go up beside left side of battery and be clipped to frame, i.e. it points up, never down.

Morning all
Just found good micro fiche online showing no ball bearing ! still seems strange to me because to my thinking the slightest bit of pressure in the box would push oil out of breather. Hopefully now I have the correct amount of oil in my problem is solved.....maybe. Thanks for the input

No oil should come out of the breather simply because it is above the oil level provided the tube extends upwards enough.
(Yes I know there were lots of problems on the small block gearboxes in this respect).

V1000 G5 gearbox is the same as every other Tonti Guzzi ...in fact same as fitted to the Cali EV Gearbox breather is simply a pipe it should go up in a loop then curve down to exit down where the battery pipe ect is. Never had gearbox oil come out ...The engine breather does need the "top hat" ball valve cleaning and replacing now and again .These bikes do work far better with the Le Mans type breather and K&N filters You have to up jet the carbs by 10% ....  I found the engine breather pipe does need to flow up and out bit like old Brit bikes

No must go UP, because there is no valve, it's an open tube just to equalise the interior to outside air pressure, if any oil is thrown up the tube it will drain back down and not be lost out the end.
