Guzzis are contrary to popular belief relatively free from big time elektrikery problems HOWEVER there are some  very common faults you can often avoid or fix faily easily  BUT if you are at all unsure about elektrikery ASK someone who is ok with it or seek out a local auto electrician, there are often Bosch auto elektrikery specialists nearby.

That said when the bike does not start :-

1) Check the Kill switch is in the ON , sounds silly BUT Guzzis will turn the starter motor with the kill switch OFF. DO NOT assume it is on LOOK AT IT , flick it on off on.

2) The Click but no starter motor is nearly ALWAYS the start relay situated either in the relay block on newer bikes OR right hand side panel or on some in the battery area , ANY 30A+ fused accesory relay from local auto parts supplier will fit this.
I found the micro relays supplied by Pyro Dan http://dpguzzi.com/relay.htm not only work on the V11 BUT can be used for start relay and headlamp relays on older bikes Shocked Brian does have a diag of this I will ask him to post it up.

3) Rubbish headlamp often cured by fitting dual relays the micro ones are brill as they fit in the headlamp, again there are dags in other club tech Also the newer bikes with the clear plastic headlamp and plastic dimpled reflector are truly awful and can be easily swapped for any 7" Cibie, Ring or (from an autojumble) older Jap bike glass lens and parabolic reflector this simple thing changed my V11 from a 30 mph dark lane crawl to "normal road speed I CAN SEE.

4) Check the earths, the main one somtimes gets put on the middle bolt on the battery carrier swap it to a bolt that goes INTO the gearbox, Other earths are all over on a Tonti frame one righthand side under front of tank has 4-5 eaths there if one is loose all sorts of nasty problems

5) The 12-15 way blocks now and again give wierd faults , I have only ever needed to replace one of these in over 38 yrs that due to me being hamfisted BUT they will benefit from a clean IF you ever do get problems otherwise DO NOT DISTURB. If you do a small amount of silicone around the edges seal them nicely

6) If you replace switchgear easy to do I use just about any jap on left and the R1 on ight is small enough to also use a Tomaselli twistgrip, NB the Honda firestorm switches are the same as fitted to the V11 range only different colours ont he switch buttons and Guzzi ones are all black.

For this reason I have the starter relay coil plus side powered off the ignition, so startee no workee if kill switch is off. The logical conclusion to this is to also earth the starter button through g/box neutral switch and a clutch switch in parallel, so also can't start it in gear and clutch engaged.

I make no claim to originality for these ideas, was unashamedly 'borrowed' from how the R80 does it. Big smile

In additon the R80 powers all the eejit dash warning lights off the kill switch as well, so you at least got a visual clue whether kill switch is off or on. Cribbed this idea as well.

I fitted a small red LED across the kill switch, so it glowed when the ignition was on, but the switch off. That did reduce the number of times I tried to embarrass myself.LOL
