So I joined this forum last year, said I was looking for a Nevada 750.

I didn't find that and have almost given up and bought a 1997 BMW F650 (and the embarrassing model name Funduro) or a Transalp 650.

However I just came across a guy selling 2 ex-Malta police T5s for EUR 1,700.

one is complete, 50K miles and runs but needs complete recommissioning.

the other is essentially bits & pieces but includes frame, engine, gearbox... enough for a future cafe racer project anyway.

Main question: is the T5 any good as a daily commuter for a noob to bikes? Are spare parts found or hen's teeth?

Thanks
Steve

Had a quick look on line. Looks like pretty much a bog std Tonti framed square barreled big block. If dressed in slightly ugly panels. As such, parts both new and used will be readily available. Couple of points:

. If you’ve not ridden Guzzis before then get a test ride from someone, somewhere – and of something in era. They are a bit odd until you get used to them.

. I presume you have some mechanical experience if you are thinking of picking up a pile of bits or two? But they are great to work on.

Will it make a good commuter? Depends on your commute. I’d say that the bikes are quite bulky and not particularly lithe. So if it’s all about wriggling through gaps in town then you might want to reconsider. If it’s more of a mixture of road work then could be just the ticket.

Sounds a bargain to me, but it will depend on just how much you need to do to get he complete one running.
But just the bits from the other one would probably fetch that sort of money if sold separately.

The T5 for Police use I believe has 18" tyres fitted which makes them very sound the Civvy one with small tyres is slightly more quirky to ride BUT the engine is sound and it is basically the same frame as all of the other Tonti bikes. Any running Big Block Guzzi is worth buying at under £2000 I recon, But to be fair go look at others if you consider the T5 you might as well look at the whole range
Spada, T3/4/5 G5 even the newer Bikes like Cali the whole range may have one just for you There are also the Mille, Strada and all the other derivatives

Thing is the frame on all the Tonti 850-1000-1100 are basically the same and therefore parts are interchangeable  You could easily put any 850 engine to 1100 one in these bikes the cycle parts make the difference so A T3 can become a Spada or a Cali or a special easily ....

I doubt there is that much choice in Malta though, also we don't know how prices vary.

Thanks all for your replies.

Brian is right, there's not much choice here at all for Guzzis. The usual source is nearby Sicily but registration tax & annual tax have gone up on imports so you need to pay more but they're worth less on resale.

Still mulling it over, my main hesitance is I can't afford to buy a lemon, and the T5 is a tad heavier than I wanted to go for my first bike. (I had a hornet but not for long so it doesn't count). Traffic is mainly urban here, but I want something I can enjoy riding on quieter roads. Otherwise i'd have got a jap 125 ages ago!

Will post here if I go for it.

Thanks again, really appreciate your responses.

Daft thing is take off the fairings , different bars, rear sets .....you cab have a lemans look alike and the T5 engine is better in traffic , you can make it look like a le mans.... the le mans engine is not easy at low speed or in traffic and on the smaller roads you probably would not use the extra power on a le mans ..... T5 engine is flexible, plenty quick enough and without all the junk it would be light enough ......

the T5 is a 'small' bike, easy to ride and plenty of guts.
