Meet point, the Emu Pie Shop, an hour south of Perth. We got there to find that the cafe had changed its name, and no more Emu Pies for sale. Pity, they were good. Crooked Carrots don't have the same appeal.

A weekender with the boys, to Augusta at the south western tip of Aus. No particular plans. Just a ride with old friends, trying to avoid weekend traffic on quieter roads. When we got to Dunsborough, we agreed to brave the tourist traffic on Caves Road.

Who let the dogs out? Lunch stop at Dunsborough.

Many caves are hidden within the limestone ridge underneath the area of Margaret River. The caves are located off Caves Road, the country road that runs through the area from Dunsborough to Cape Leeuwin in the south. As artists and artisans settled in the Margaret River area, Caves Road has become more than is a base for exploring some of the caves that have formed over eons along this stretch of coastline. Many of the famed Margaret River wineries are located off Caves Road, offering Cellar Door tastings and delightful cafes and restaurants using fresh local produce, fish freshly caught from the Indian Ocean as well as local crustaceans and excellent wines..Splendid beaches for surfing, swimming and fishing are located off the Margaret River Caves Road; where National Trust properties are set in delightful forests. Magnificent hedgerows of wild flowers line the road in season and dolphins frolic on quiet beaches, with whales en route to their migration off shore. The Caves Road drive is peaceful and the driver is never far from the ocean or a gallery, cafe or attraction.

Actually you can't see the sea at all from the road, but there are plenty of places where you can detour for a glimpse of rugged coastline. The road is 70 miles long, twisting through undulating green country. It is very wooded all the way, but punctuated with vineyards at the northern end, and beautiful karri forest to the south. There are no good straights to pass the tourist traffic, and its mostly double white line anyway. Today the traffic was annoying, but not as bad as expected. After a beer at the Karridale Pub, we decided it deserved another faster run in the early morning.

These plans are all very well, but the red wine is good here, and the next morning we weren't as keen as we'd like to have been. Nevertheless, we made it early enough, and were rewarded with a brilliant ride north. Incessant fast bends through the forest at a good pace is a nice start to the day.

Karri forest. Had to stop and take a pic, but lost the guys, and didn't catch them till the breakfast stop.

Breakfast at Cowtown, pronounced Co-arrow-mup. They've taken the cow theme a bit over the top, here. No, those aren't real cows. Pic taken from another cafe that has changed its name. Now its the Classic Cow Cafe. Last year it was the Udderly Divine Cafe.

You know, I thought the snakes, spiders and Fosters were enough reason to hate everything Australian, now I've got to add jealousy of your roads...
