Can anyone recommend a certain oil for breaking in a new camshaft with flat tappets?
The preferred breaking in procedure? Specifically it's for a LM mk2 with mild performance street cam. |

I've used this stuff: http://ebay.eu/1QYWK0y in the past on smaller Guzzi motors with no problem so I'm sure it'd be fine with a V twin too, it alsoo has Moly in it. Last V twin I rebuilt was 20 years ago and used a specific cam oil that we had in the workshop where I was working but to me it looked just like a 20/50 oil in a can. On starting I had the kill switch on so that the motor turned over to get the oil up to pressure, then I started the motor, and let it run at about 2,000 rpm for about 10/15 minutes and to check for leaks etc. Then I changed the oil again, then started to use the bike. Others may have a different method!

Thanks folks. I'll probably use a 20w/50 oil with the Lucas additive. An issue will be to get static timing right from assembly so the engine can be revved immediately to 2000rpm. May I ought to break in with only the outer valve springs? I don't know.
p.s. italianmoto, once you have the Reparto Sperimentale signs for sale again, I'd like to buy one. |

I always assemble components using Graphagen. Not sure that's the correct spelling. Recommended by Rotax and have been using ever since working on my old MT500.

You can also get ZDDP additive from www.frost.co.uk
http://www.frost.co.uk/zddplus-anti-wear-oil-additive.html As it's an old model the oil is best something like mineral SAE 20-W50 "for diesel cars" / "classic cars". |
