So, I need some advice from the collective….

I dropped the oil out of my 850GT gearbox today – it’s done about 6000 miles since the last change I think. The oil itself was not discoloured but when I tipped it into the waste container there were a few metallic flakes in the bottom of the tub. A couple of these stuck to my magnet, although they were only about 1mm in size.

The gearbox is not noisy and all works as it should, so do I just keep using it until it develops some symptoms or do I pull it apart? As a compromise I did wonder about using it for a few weeks and then dropping the oil again to see what’s in there.

Change oil, don't worry about it, keep riding, take it apart when it stops working! (I put a bit of Moly in mine, don't know if you're meant to or not.)

Gearboxes will flake metal as there is a huge amount going on in a gearbox compared to engines with gears meshing, swapping, etc, etc. Fit a magnet to the plug which should help and a bit of Molyslip wouldn't hurt but isn't 100% required.

Don't fit it till its broke, gearboxes can take a huge amount of abuse.

This is why the stock filler plug is the type with a magnet insert, I.e. Same style as sump drain plug.

I once had an old style Mini that regularly had sizeable bits of swarf in its oil at every oil change. Was still running when I sold it.

When I got my sport I changed gearbox oil to find metal flakes like you . I put some molly slip in and so far no problem . I agree with all the above posts . I'm extra careful changing gear nowadays

I used to get some bits on my Cali (66k) on each oild change, but never anything big so i didnt worry about it, fairly normal for a big clunky gearbox i would think

Thanks all, I'll leave well alone. I didn't put any moly in, but will drain again over winter and put some in then if it seems OK.

Don't need to drain just to add the moly. (?)

Added molyslip to mine last couple of changes, was fine with it. Think it makes the gear selectors a bit more slippery too which helps.
