Two options, helicoil to use the original plug or drill and tap to the next size up if you can. Either way use plenty or heavy grease on the drill and tap to catch the majority of the swarf and wash out with a tube and paraffin then tube and solvent before fitting the plug and putting the oil back in.

When I had mine done had to be something called an insert, due to the casing not being thick enough to take a helicoil. Was much stronger than a helicoil anyway.

Yep inserts are great, surprised they could drill the case large enough to take one but if you can, you can.

I use Comma 20/50 on my old Guzzi singles, cheap and does the job, and I chnage it regularly, why pay more?: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COMMA-MOTORWAY-MINERAL-OIL-20W50-20-50-4-5L-/221282969306?hash=item33857e26da

I`ve fixed it!! (drain plug bevel drive) Bought a stainless M10 bolt, cut it about two/three threads longer than the original and it tightened up lovely.....lucky Thumbs Up Snag is now, with all oils changed and to the right levels, the seal I fitted to the clutch actuator shaft is leaking again. I must admit, the "O" ring I fitted wasn`t exactly the same as what came off but thought I`d got away with it...obviously not.

You may be thinking of the over-sized 'Case-Saver' inserts (popular for VW Magnesium Crankcases).
There are 'solid' inserts that aren't too much bigger than Helicoils.
Google 'Keensert'.

As I remember it was like a short tube, threaded inside, and the ends splayed out and over to hold it in, much like the heads of a rivet.

Sounds more like a 'Rivnut' to me.
Could be used if the casing is fairly thin (3-4mm or so)
They're not designed to be Oil-tight, but if fitted 'wet' with some Epoxy adhesive they would seal well enough.
