So here we are in Slovenia coming down the South side of the Vrsic Pass.

If you look in the shadows you can see us parked up brewing a coffee in the shade. Not the most scenic place to stop but stopping was good. The pass is truly mad. Coming from the North it starts off sensible enough , fairly steep up, then you hit the cobblestone corners. Why why why ? Anyway up and over the top and the G5 is delighting in the extra oxygen as the altitude drops. Soon enough we caught a group of 10 Swiss bikes all clean and shiney. Having a ball into the downhill hairpins but they were wanging off the corners. Next corner we are all over them again. Stuff this ! Parked up for two or three minutes to give them a bit of a head start. Caught them again after a few miles. We were flying so to speak. Coming off the hairpin before the photo my rear ( linked ) pedal hit the floor boards. Eeeeek and double eeeeek.
Nice pull off in the shade and let the brakes cool off. Boiled out of the master cylinder.
An hour and a few espressos later we were back at it although a bit more cautiously.

More photos and stories to come.

Cheers

I did warn you about the cobbles!! Why? I can only imagine that they are a leftover from when the majority of the road was unsurfaced.I'm guessing that they were a safety feature !!!

I get the twitches on cobbles in quaint market towns but can't imagine finding them on downhill tight bends.Shocked
Like the brew up shot.Wink

Cobbles are in my view at their absolute best when riding a rigid framed bike with girder forks in torrential rain. You just can't help laughing,it hides the fear!!

Now we are just starting to climb the Grossglockner pass. We had stayed in Fulpme overnight just South of Innsbruck.

" />

Time for a wee brew up and enjoy the quiet after a few hours in the road. Good bit of scenery up there and as you get higher you come to the big hairpins. Not the tight little ones that came later but good practice all the same. Highlight for me was the bit that just looks like a ramp into the sky where it curves around the top viewpoint.
A few miles later we stopped before the tunnel at the top of the mountain to pick up a few souvenir pebbles. My friend Shane who loves a bit of a chat with anyone who will listen started talking to three bikers. Who is he talking to now, I thought ? Only his mechanic and his Dad from Newry in Co Down. Flipping heck you can go no where !!
Anyway a wee splash of rain and down the other side heading for Slovenia that night.

Cheers

So here we are in Slovenia parked up at Aljazev Dom 10km up a dirt road with Mt Triglav looming above us. Not a sound to be heard. So far removed from London it was like a dream. Basic accommodation and local Slovenian hearty food. Few beers and curfew at 10 as the climbers and walkers like an early start.
We were going to stay 3 nights in Slovenia but to cut down the long days on the road for the return journey we headed straight for Trieste the next morning. Through the Vrisic Pass as talked about earlier.
