Morning. I will very shortly need new tyres and have just been reading the book on how to remove the rear wheel, seems easy enough, then moved onto the front wheel and noticed a small part in the manual regarding the directional arrows embossed on the tyre walls.
Could someone explain why the rear tyre is fitted in direction of rotation and the front is fitted against direction of rotation? Some tyres have an arrow moulded on the sidewall, in these cases the tyres should be fitted as follows: rear wheel: arrow pointing in the direction of rotation; front wheel: arrow pointing against the direction of rotation. N.B. - These instructions should be followed unless otherwise directed by the tyre manufacturer. Many thanks for help. Kev

It will also depend on whether a tyre is made specifically for front or back, as some are in which case use the arrow in the normal direction.
But universal tyres are often made to withstand forces mainly in one direction. On the back tyre this is traction, on the front, braking, so the forces are opposite, hence the different direction of the arrow.

Yep. A universal tyre might actually have different direction arrows on it, one for front fitment the other for rear fitment and labelled as such.

On the Vthou the tyres have always been this way the rear goes one way the front the other, well worth popping a direction of rotation arrow on the rim, I use a felt tip pen and wipe it off afterwards I DID have one tyre fitter fit the tyre the wrong way once, the rear tyre is obvious the front less so.
