Is it acceptable to use the 'F' word on this forum in order to express being very impressed, admiration and ultimately mild jealousy??

Many thanks!
It is quite a responsibility restoring a low mileage, largely original machine. I'm super critical but I think it has turned out well because isn't far off how it would have looked when it left the factory. The chrome on the indicators, crash bars etc looks very similar to the original. I now have the assurance that it has been properly done and won't start deteriorating. The exhaust, however, looks a bit too good to be true! The headers haven't really started to go blue yet - a tell-tale sign! The paintwork looks better than the original and the tank seams have disappeared. I had the original dealer stickers, one of which was stuck to the tank, re-produced by a specialist. The responsibility is making things sound but not grossly over-doing the finishes to make the machine look false and cease to be a good reference for others restoring the same model. I once restored a 1966 Rover 2000 that I bought from an old lady's estate in Birmingham. She had done 2,000 miles in it and then put it away in her garage unused for nearly 25 years. I bought it because of its low mileage and the new condition of its red leather interior. She was elderly and had hit various hard objects parking it so the exterior was a bit of a mess. I took it completely apart and over a 4 year period tried to return it as close as possible to original condition. At the end of this labour of love, which involved hundreds of hours of work and thousands of pounds of new parts, it did look close to a brand new car. The big giveaway was the paintwork which I had sprayed in the original cellulose paint panel by (detachable) panel, let set for three months, and then buffed by hand with soap and very fine emery paper over a six week period. My real reward was that David Bache, one of the designers of the P6 Rover, saw it when it was completed and suggested it should be in Rover's museum! The job is clearly easier if the vehicle hasn't been used very much and retains some of its original finishes. Over the years I have enjoyed hunting for such vehicles. A 1973 P6 Rover 3500 discovered almost unused (7,000 miles) in a garage in Herfordshire, a 1996 Saab 900 (12,000 miles) stored for 20 years in Yorkshire, a 2003 Jaguar XKR (6,000 miles) in Bath and so on. Its nice liberating them, recommissioning / restoring them, and using them. I love riding the T3 and it is clearly enjoying its freedom after being incarcerated for so long. |
