well it isn't I suspect rectifier but the brush holder on the alt is knackered and brushes not brill anyone found where to get one I know the BMW's use the same set up looked and it is £45 for brush holders and Brushes mind the brushes from Motoworks with rings fitted are only £5 BUT looking around the electrex RR451 new system is £350 brushless alt and solid start reg/rect has anyone fitted it? does it work better?

Got  a guy who may be able to check and repair old rectifier the reg checks out OK and I have a spare one Min is sending me a working rect in the post but just thinking and figuring Big smile

well rectifier checks out so the new brush holder is ordered nothing I can do now really till that gets here other than follow the checks in Guzziology, Cheers Min got the rect today but as guy called earlier to tell me rectifier checks out I will hold off putting it on just yet

Got a tip tho' if you take out the regulator and run a jumper from D+ on rectifier to the DF on the alternator IF the CWL goes out it is the reg if it stays on it is the alternator ...quick check for tomorrow I am betting it is the utterly knackered brush holder and brushes but I will do the other checks and let y'all know how it goes I think if the reg is duff I may go for the electronic one I do not see the real advantage of altering to reg/rectifier too many cannot get CWL to work and the way it dumps to the earth and just creates heat is alarming The Bosch system has worked faultlessly for 25 yrs I only remember having new brushes once that was at LEAST 15 yrs ago!!! had the rectifier get a new diode due to my idiocy THAT was 25 yrs ago so really I have to say it has been reliable and to replace the whole system with new bits is under £200 compared to £350 to go to the brushless system ...my doubts are possible understood when you realise the 2002 Le mans has had to have a new reg/rectifier after under 10 yrs use ....so much for the older Guzzis having unreliable elektrikery .....

By the way no brush holders available from Guzzi shops got them from Motorworks ...same charging system fitted to BMW air head bikes of the same era ...by the way the electronic reg is also fitted to many European cars of the same era too I also have a supplier for the rectifier the OEM Bosch one and it will be A hell of a saving on the German made one of course there are pattern parts BUT these rarely fail so OEM  , quite a saving I am going to see what else he can supply and will post it up

That's a useful test.

Re the SS reg see also my post: charging light again (by Min) - solid-state regulator

In fact think I'll copy it to my new regulator thread...
