Well MOT in a couple of weeks, looks like I will have to operate, do a cataractomy. Can't see it passing like that.

Has it gone all the way through or did you get lucky and it's just on the surface where the cloth was touching? If so it might just polish out. Looks like it might have blistered up properly though.

I used Auotosol scratch remover http://www.thepolishingshop.co.uk/acatalog/Metal_Polish.html (scroll down)to remove really deep scratches from a screen after I dropped a bike in the garage. I was amazed by the results' You couldn't tell where the scratches had been afterwards. The only extras I needed was a cloth and some elbow grease!Might be worth a try and anyway, a tube of that stuff is always useful to have around (if you're as clumsy and accident prone as I am ).

No this has boiled all the way through.
I am going to try to cut the offending bit out, and cover with something to get through the MOT. I do have a couple of old car headlight protectors which have a surprisingly similar shape.

Yes cutting it out is the best way, the plastic has been cooked so no amount of polishing will bring it back clear.

Just contemplating what to use, got some hole saws, but I know from experience that if you try to cut this sort of thing too quickly it just melts. Found that out using a jig saw on a screen. The cut welded itself up again behind the saw blade.
I also have to seal it up against the elements afterwards.

I have cut holes in screens before using a hole saw. just need to keep pressure forwards on the drill to pop to saw bit out the other end, then disconnect from drill to remove. as it was only cutting through a couple of mills I just left it on full speed and drilled it - suppose you have to watch not to go all the way through because of the interior unless it is easy to get the bit off the bike

It's a right pain tp remove the headlight, though I have done it once. But then the front lens is glued in anyway so not much help.

Well I operated, there are now two 70mm holes in the lens. I've covered them for the moment with that clear lens repair tape. Should do for the MOT. Remember these are projector units, so there is another lens behind, and the reflector and bulb are sealed behind that.
I am trying to match the circles I cut out with a part of the car headlight protectors, looking promising. The material had swelled up to about 50% greater thickness there the white bits were.

The next stage is a bit more challenging, partly cutting out a disc from the right part of the headlight protectors, but also working out how to fix them in place.
