Not having run madam's Monza for a while, (she's been razzing around on her CBR), I decided to drag it out of the shed for a spin today. Whipped the plugs out, squirted some oil in and span the engine over in preparation. After a few revolutions the starter motor stopped and both front, front only, not rear, indicators came on. End of play. WTAF? Ideas on a post card to the usual address!!!

So I whipped off the tank and the starter switch / throttle for a quick look. All sorts of whacky stuff going on. Turn on the lights and the instrument panel lights *all* illuminate (well, almost all). Press the starter, the indicators and indicator signals illuminate (but don't flash) and there's a buzzing noise from the instrument panel / clocks. Eeeeek! Check the brake lights ... working ... aaaaand ... everything's reset back to normal. Erm ...whut? Ouija board! Where the hell did I put the ouija board!

I had similar when first trying to start my recently renovated lario, I think you will find its down to a poor battery or one that is not high enough amperage. stick a meaty battery on and double check thicker leads to earth etc and you should be OK. Dave.

I’ll bet a whole round English pound that it’s an earth issue.

I second that. Something is putting 11v down an earth. When there is 13V coming the other way it'll give way, when the starter motor drops it, it does not. IMHO you want to find it. Flat batteries or not enough for cranking is the next stage. Andy

Thirdly. If the dash is missing an earth all kinds of weird stuff may happen. This was my experience with a LM2 dashboard. I made sure it had a separate earth wire to frame, and NOT just rely on the steering head bearings (but I forgot to connect it before testing the dash). Ditto any handlbar buttons going to earth (I think this was mainly horn). |
