Classic fault finding.
When you’ve fixed the problem, reverse the last step.
Does that recreate the problem repeatably? And when you re-do the last step, does it repeatably correct the issue? If so, you have a high probability of having isolated the root cause. |

Good idea, and would have done, but unfortunately managed to break the old coil when taking it off!
The nut securing the terminals was pretty stuck on, when removing the nut the whole terminal post came with it, along with a chunk of the ceramic base. Ah well, it'll remain a mystery |

That points to a problem with the coil anyway.
