Looking for advice re knocking noise from Griso 1100, hard to tell where its coming from but sounds more like engine than transmission. Apart from all the usual rattles, clutch, transmission. It sounds to me like a very loud tappet or little end knock BUT don't think its either and its not constant or at higher revs/speed that I can hear. -
It only started after I stalled the bike pulling away with too little revs, on journey home noticed a bit of a knock around 50 mph or if under heavy load. Seems to have got a bit worse recently. Ive adjusted the tappets and all were only very slightly out so not that. No errors on ECU in the diagnostic.
Can a stall upset the throttle bodies or sensors ? Never had a low octane fuel issue before so dont think its that. Ideas appreciated to work through simplest culprits first. Cheers Hugh |

I wouldn't expect a stall to upset anything in terms of throttle bodies or sensors. Could just load the clutch/gearbox/final drive, but can't think of anything specific. Can you hear it when on the stand? If so, the screwdriver stethascope trick may help you isolate the source.

If it's the engine and it happens under a heavy load, you should be able to use your clutch with the bike standing still and in gear to load the engine and make it happen. If you can, then that will point more to the engine than anything else. If not, then you may want to examine components behind the engine.

A top end rattle can be caused on high mileage engine, by the "wrist" pin circlip wearing they do and if one breaks the cylinder is scored, Had one do this on my V1000 BUT it had covered well over 100k miles.
Other daft things I have experienced causing rattles:- Side stand touching exhaust. Centre stand losing a bump stop Loose mudguard loose exhaust header on my old bike I had a time where the exhaust header nuts worked loose, in the end I put new studs in there no idea what caused it slightly loose front mounting bolt, they need checking Worth going round them all Owning a Guzzi, the same one for over 30 yrs you tend to come across all sorts of foibles some due to lack of attention or lack of knowledge it is as ever a learning curve. Hope you find a daft loose something

Thanks for the replies - ive just got another issue on my Triumph Tiger fixed, so time to turn attention to the Griso as spring is calling ! I will try to see if its a rogue rattle, or engine or gearbox. Id be surprised if a low revs pulling away stall could throw an engine bearing but I suppose a gearbox with a little backlash could be vulnerable ?
By the way, dont know if anyone is interested in buying a 1999 1100 sporti which is IN BITS. I took it apart to fix the clutch about 14 yrs ago and meant to completely restore/rebuild it but just havnt or now will not get around to it. Maybe when I retire Or poss will offer it to guzzibits for spares. TBH I so much prefer the Griso now Ive lost the will.

Let me know if you're serious about outing the Sport, I've got one already so won't curse you if there's a few bits missing.

Thanks for the interest in the 1100 sporti in bits. its the later black or more like bronze metalic with injection. Had a chip when I bought it so went pretty well which is probably why I cooked the clutch. I was riding it year round to work and for fun. I bought an 1150 GS to go touring on and never got around to sorting it all out and here we are 15 some years later. Family life etc gets in the way and realised needed to sort quite a few things. Clutch was slipping (primary problem) so that needs replacing, rear shock most likely will need replacing or rebuild, obviously all seals/tyres etc. Frame could do with a repaint. gearbox output shaft has 1 spline damaged, rear bevel box leaked a little, barrels and top end looked good to me as it had only done about 35/40k, paintwork not perfect and screen had a crack I think. I bought a mates Griso and loved that so much it took my mind off the sporti. So - having a think about value considering its in bits which I appreciate is a red flag to some, only thing missing is the front footpeg hangers which I used to lower the Griso pegs. All boxed up or stored in a dry workshop or the loft. I will try to get it all out on the lawn and take pics otherwise its an unknown to you. I am not in any hurry or desperate to sell. Hugh
1100 Sport i in better days when all together.
