So back in the day, when performing a compression test, you were able to turn the petrol tap off, flick the kill switch off and still be able to crank the engine to obtain a reading. How do you get round that on a modern fuel injected bike and one that the kill switch prevents the starter from turning? It's a 2013 V7. Thanks in advance!

I don't bother trying to kill fuel (carbs = you'd have to empty the bowls if you want to stop any fuel getting in, or FI bikes = I would just pull the injector electrical connections but can't be bothered). I just pull both plugs off & test each side with WOT....sure there'll be a bit of fuel squirting in but it doesn't take many turns to get to compression reading.
So take the FI electrical connector off if you really want no fuel... |

For a precise pressure measurement, the engine has to be still at running temperature. Block the throttle grip (or throttle operating mechanism) by some suitable means in the fully opened position. Leave the key switch in "OFF" position! Then disconnect the control wire (6.3mm AMP Faston) from the starter's solenoid, and connect this terminal with battery+ by a single wire -> the starter operates! Have the wire's one end reliably fixed to the battery pole, and be careful not to touch any conductive chassis part with the other end, as there is no fuse in this "auxiliary circuit". Rudi
