Hi... just had an excellent paint job for my 1000s fuel tank... yes I know I should have taken reference photos but sadly I didn't!
Can anyone help or advise on correct position of Moto Guzzi metal tank side badges? Couple of photos of tank with a rule from an edge for hieght and length would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

If I can remember correctly the tank transfers/decals/ stickers whatever you want to call them have a gap between top, the longer one, and the bottom for the positioning of the badge. I bought a set from Stein- Dinse a few years ago.

I haven't got the bike now so I can't give you exact measurements but I have many pics which may help.

Ken is correct regarding most things to do with Guzzi, Luigi, if he has had a bit of wino for lunch, especially on a Friday, might find bits and bobs lying about which don't necessarily fit onto that bike, my 1000S being a prime example where he had managed to stamp the wrong model designation onto the Vin plate VH when it should have been VVLOLHug

Here's a few...

The distance to the lower edge of the forward leg of the M is measured from the tank seam.  I could not get the rule to maintain full contact with the tank surface when measuring this; the measurement is taken contacting the badge and contacting the tank surface as much as possible downwards.

"100-S-BADGE-POSN-TO-LOWER-TANK-EDGE-70-MM

The distance from the front of the tank to the badge is measured from the foremost bit of the 'point' at the front of the tank and is measured around the curvature of the tank.

"GUZZI-1000-S-BADGE-POSN-TO-FRONT-POINT-OF-TANK-180-MM

An overview of the tank showing the badge isn't parallel with the line of the bulge, and is only close to parallel with the bottom seam.  It looks horizontal when the bike is on its wheels - maybe by eye is the best method for this.

I doubt it makes a difference, but the bike's a series 1, by the way.

Also; in my experience of vehicle production (which dates back even further than this era!), badges, decals, stripes etc. are placed either using a template or a large decal sheet with fixed datum points on it.  Badge positioning should be consistent on these bikes.

Here's a video of the bike prior to sending it off, it's on the forum somewhere, but here's the link.

As for the polishing, it's actually very technical Wink, but most people have the equipment to hand to do it;

 Some Solvol Autosol,

Some pieces of old rag, in my case, if I'm not going out at the weekend, Ladies underwear!

An index finger, right or left doesn't matter,

 Most importantly, some spit,

Rub like buggery until it's black, leave to dry and hand polish off.

I find things like rotary polishers/mops too erratic and not precise enough to get into small areas.

Ah, pure oldskool elbow grease and Autosol.
I'm waaay too lazy for that, I'll bribe one of my kids to do it.
Cheers.

Coincidentally, today I received a metal polish highly recommended by a contact in the Motor Trade who has a collection of classic bikes.  Not opened it yet.

Pro25 by Zephyr -  their Signature Series "Easy Kut".

He strongly advises to use gloves else you'll get black hands.  Strongly worded Precautionary Statements are on the bottle too.

The link above is to a 32 fl oz bottle but I have ia 16 oz (1 pint US) bottle.

Tony

P.S. he warns the product tends to separate and settle so shake very well before use.

PPS took the front alloy forks of his 70s off-roader from matt grey to chrome-like in one go.  Sounds potent!
