Ok, so my 750 S3 has been running intermittently one one for a while. Did all the obvious, last thing being new points last week - didn't make a difference. Today, put back on old 40 year old condensor to top set of points to replace the new one fitted last week, and hey presto, the bike is now running perfectly. Aren't condensors meant to be fitted in pairs?

That implies there must be another one somewhere for the set that appears not to have any. Putting a new one on (in parallel with the existing) made too much capacitance which will weaken the spark as well as none or not enough. If not kill it altogether.

I think it's a case of new condensor was faulty. Old one still OK. A condensor is a condensor, no need to replace one which works, so I don't see any reason to replace in pairs.

I agree that I think the new one fitted must have been faulty. What should I do, ask for a new replacement but get a new pair instead and fit those together? Thing is, it's running perfectly now....

You could always keep a spare with you just in case.

I called Paul at Corsa this morning who supplied the condensor and he said they didn't have to be put on in pairs - and that he'd send me another out, so yes, I'll keep it as a spare in case the at least 25 years old one does decide to stop working, though it's done well up until now!

I can see no logical electrical reason why they should be replaced in pairs, generally they work or they don't. Matching is not an issue.
