If you can't get a four speed spring a five speed can be used. If I remember rightly the "legs" have to be shortened a bit. Greg Bender shows how it should be fitted. Have you tried "Gutsibits" in the UK for the correct spring, I think they have them.
Yes, they are showing one in stock. |

4 spds. rarely break springs and the spring is easy to change (unlike 5 spds.) so if the new spring isn't fitting correctly, then I'd use the old one. As for the ball - if the speedometer drive "worm" gear has an indent for a ball in it, then it should have one. By '71 it should definitely have one.

ok Dave I think I got your message and, believe me, I knew and had read all the articles and books you and Amboman told me to do. But and there's always one... I'm not native English and that part of Pete's article (and the image too) confused me a bit and I want to make sure what I'm going to do. Don't get me wrong....Greg´s site, guzzitec, Clyton´s book and others are fabulous and a great learning for me But with all of those pawls photos of how not to do it (on Greg's website too) and all similar to each other and with the IN, OUT, UP, DOWN termilogies I was confused..... That's it. Only. I'm not lazy and I don't like to bother just because I like it. Sorry for my ignorance but like i said...i'm a 54 years old bigginer that thougth the forum was a go way to go.... However, thank you so much for your help and support (and everyone). When I start the assembeling of transmition, I'll put pictures for whoever wants (and can) give their opinion. By the way, I've been rereading Greg's website yesterday night once again and my box seems to be a late one. See you soon Very grateful for your time and patience Best regards

The spring is there and is not broken but it does not flat in the case as it should be (i think....) I try to use the original one and pry for the best. There was no ball but the trasmission has been opened before. I belive it´s gone. I'll order a new one. Thank you very much for your kind reply

The taxes for one spring (Gutsibits) to here are insane. My goverment like to fill their pockets with taxes from every where. Because of that, a spring taxes and deliveries is four or five times the price of a simple spring. I´ll use the old one. Thanks again.

I think I would do the same. There are two unavoidable things in life................death and taxes!!
