Had a clutch failure that has the symptoms of a friction plate throwing a spring. I've heard I need to drop the engine. Is there any procedure for this? Any special tools needed?

If you don't have it, this is the workshop manual.

What you will need is a way to centre the clutch plates when refitting.

With a Guzzi think of the configuration more like a car or BMW set up engine bell housing gearbox. Therefore to get at the clutch you have to take everything off from the rear ....eventually leaving the frame with front wheel and lift rear of frame up so the front end wheels away...you are left with the engine and trans .... it is at least 8 hrs job you have to take off

Tank, Battery, starter, rear wheel out, swing arm, centre stand you need something to pop under the sump to hold engine/trans at the correct height makes it easier to remount everything, factory use a metal frame. undo all sensors, good idea to mark wires with masking tape and write on what is what.

There is a method where you lift the rear and support it leaving front end attached, "Crabbing the frame" I have done it but not a big fan prefer getting everything out of the way, feels way safer.

Once gearbox is off you can use the gearbox sprocket to centre the clutch BUT if you buy a clutch kit complete some will do a deal to inc centering tool it does make life a lot easier. while you are doing this check engine seal gearbox seal look at drive shaft, grease splines and the UJ .... I always check all the other stuff like wheel bearings ... anytime anything comes off good reason to check, clean re lube ...This is do able get manual, read take your time it is, in my opinion one of the most time consuming jobs on a guzzi but a clutch ought to last 80-100k miles

If miles are way less and clutch is just sticking before ripping it all apart try cleaning the clutch ... the amount of dust that clogs up the splines is astounding

I don't think crabbing the frame applies to the Stelvio.

No, unfortunately it doesn't.
To be honest, once you've gone that far, how much time (relatively) would you save by leaving a couple of Engine Bolts in?
Would be a good time to refurbish the Frame finish I'm thinking, might as well.

Any progress with this Rich?

I've heard/read in several places that the Clutch Unit is from a small Hyundai car, but have never seen any real details.

I know the later Clutches for the 8V 1200s are the same as on the Guzzi 1400s, and have a much lighter feel.

I'm hoping that by not using my Clutch much (doing Clutchless down-changes, and having a Quick-Shifter fitted), mine will outlast most of the rest of the Bike!
Doc out!
