The bevel box on my Le Mans is whining and always has since I have had the bike. I know its not right as my previous Le Mans didn't do it so I have taken it apart. Going to helicoil the drain and and level plugs while it is apart (level is leaking). I'd ontacted a well known Guzzi specialist but he's not replied to ny second email when I suggested  I'd get all the bearings replacedUnhappy
Got a gasket set on order from Gutsibits and new bearings the large ball race and the smaller needle bearing for the crown wheel.
I've read the "Living in the past" guide on refurbishing the bevel box and it suggests getting a machine shop to remove the outer race of the needle bearing. I do have a two and three legged puller but not one that one that will fit. I also have a blow torchSmile. Any suggestions for geting the out race out? I may resort to the Dremel and cut through the race if I can't pull it.

There is no mention of removing the inner race from the crown wheel. Mine is slightly scored so need replacing, I'm think blow torch again and if no luck Dremel. To replace, the crown wheel will go in the freezer and the inner race will be warmed up using a hot air gun.

For the outer race replacement, the case will be warmed , the outer race will go in the freezer and I'll use the puller as suggested in the "living in the past" guide.

Open to any other suggestions.

I seem to remember seeing in a workshop manual a guide to getting the bevel gears to mate properly, showing the wear marks, could that be the cause of rhe noise? All done by shims I thought.

The gears are fine, cleaned and degreased everything and even put my glasses on to look. Whilst there is a bit of swarf on the magnet, which may be from the inner race, there were no marks on the teeth that I could see, but will have another look.
It might be that there was only one large paper gasket on the shim rather than one on each side, and the bolts were done up tight rather than sufficent to allow free play which may be the cause.

It's not marks on the teeth, it's where the polished surface is, showing where the mating surface is.

The diagram was actually in my V50 manual.
It talks of using engineers blue to check where the gears mate.

It was a shiny polished surface (marks) I was looking for and could see nothing.
