Just for interest, here's a picture of the Herald's distributor body. You can see the adjuster knob on the LHS of the body, conveniently labelled 'A/R'. I don't know how easy it would be to adapt the Lucas body to the Marelli internals/points assembly, but it might be worth a look. It's given me an idea about my Constellation/Meteor Minor engines!

Well, there you go! They look to be pretty much the same body-type, don't they?

The dizzi s adjustable it does ture BUT by adding 2nd set of points the moving of the dizzy only works on 1 set the bottom set relies on adjusting the points themselves and facet, maybe other points need the oval adjustment filed out a little bit there is a good page on setting them by Pete Roper and the section in the Lucas Rita tells you on big block bikes each tooth on the flywheel = 3.75 degrees
Look up the thread "Spada running rough" scroll down I posted the article by Pete Roper on pg 2 easy to follow worth copying |

Your point is sound Ken, with 2 sets of points, only one of them will be spot-on using the adjustment on the distributor body.
Triumph eventually changed over from the twin-points single-adjustment backplate (Lucas 4CA) to the Marelli type (Lucas 6CA - both sets independently adjustable) in the late 1960's to cure the rough-running of the Bonneville engine, where of course only one cylinder could ever be timed correctly. In the old days, the generally accepted policy was to share any ignition timing disparity between one cylinder and the other to minimise the timing error on both. But it was hardly a cure. Those with more patience and skill could achieve better results on the original 4CA by fractionally altering the gap on the second set of points, thereby advancing or retarding the timing on the second cylinder to get as close as possible to the ideal timing. More faff!

Using a Rita, the relative timing between left and right is fixed by the machining of the “cam” which triggers the reluctor, so the only timing adjustment is by turning the body, or arranging the plate to turn within it, which is where I’d like to go.
I well recall the micrometer adjustment on my Mini. Cheers Simon PS, Ken, thanks for your dissy which has been scrubbed& polished, and the Rita has had new innards fitted. As it happens, the LeMans is running very happily, but it’ll get upgraded anyway! Edited by Simond - 28 Sep 2021 at 19:06 |

Welcome mate I was not going to use it . The Pete Roper article goes through the points set up very well adjusting the dizzy first , elongating the oval adjustment on lower set allows you to get the points set nicely ..... there are many alternatives to the points I have lists of alternative parts
Often trawl through new old stock points and condensers at autojumbles taking a list of Facet, Marelli Bosch part numbers does help. I found 4 new old stock condensers £1 each and some Facet points for the V1000 they were £2 each |
