Lube Ambo Speedometer Cable?

As this is my first "classic" resto with a mechanical speedo cable, I'm curious if the cable should be lubed like the clutch and brake cables? If so, is cable lube the appropriate lubricant? I can't locate any info in the repair manuals on this. Thanks.

you have to be careful as if lude gets into head it will not do it good on my 76 bike I take cable top end out yearly and dribble 3:1 down into it , works well but has to be left to drain down ..hope this helps

I take the inner cable out and apply a light coating of thin moly grease to all but the top 1" or so. It's especially important to grease it well where it goes into the transmission. The rubber sleeve at that end of the cable that's supposed to keep water out doesn't always do it's job and if it's not greased, will rust and seize.

Moly or graphite grease was always the way, but maybelithium grease might also work these days as it has better waterproofing qualities.
But some lube is essential.

As above I usually lube the cable twice a year with graphited grease. The current inner cable on the V7 Special has lasted 10 years so far.

I had exactly this problem on my 850 Tonti. Breakages were regular and always because the inner rusted literally solid, at that end, so that it wouldn't bend, so snapped instead. Because there was a gap around the top of the rubber sleeve, letting water in, I wrapped tape around to seal it then a small cable tie to keep the tape in place. That solved the problem. No more rust after that. Ditto for the tacho cable (those broke too!)
