Hi everyone
Trying to sort a pair of rear shock and not sure if the ones I have are original, probably not. Does anyone know if the standard length was 310mm or 330mm, I seem to be getting conflicting information on Mr Google. Cheers Ian

Well,
Having just gone through this saga myself! I have a 1980 v50 mk2 and the original owners manual and workshop manual shows I think 305mm but when I approached hagon they were selling 310mm, so I settled for that and bought them With a 14mm eye bush at either end. But if you look at the IKON site who do the old Koni s , then the v50 mk2 custom are different lengths again , Have a look at their web page and you can see the different length for the different v50s

Yup done all that, mines a 1980 ii as well. I've found between 310 and 330 centre to centre, but I have my eye on some rather snazzy ones but they are 330 Hey ho don't suppose it would make much difference in the long run Thanks Ian

The reason I changed mine from the longer joins that were on the bike was that i couldn't get it to stand upright on the centre stand securely.
The longer shocks pushed the swinging arm down until it touched the pillion frame tubes ! But equally, the rear wheel was so low it rubbed on the ground making the bike insecure on the stand. The stand pivots were not worn or oval but good condition.

The V50s have a shock absorber length of 305mm centre to centre the V50C (custom) has the 330mm because the angle is different. Going any longer than 305mm may upset the suspension but it also puts the UJ and drive shaft at a steeper angle which could result in extra wear. As mentioned the rear tyre may not leave the ground when the centre stand is down if the shocks are too long.

I've been thinking a bit too much about fitting slightly longer shocks lately. A oair of nice Koni shocks in 330 mm are for sale cheap locally so Started fiddle a bit with autocad to get an idea of the changes.
When on centre stand the angle of the UJ will change 3° from 6° to 9°. I don't know how much that would be when ridden. But I guess normal 310 will compress to an UJ angle of 0° and with the longer ones that'd be around the 3°... Rear tyre would be 23 mm closer to the ground - only about 10 mm off the ground. Depending on tyre. Free height under bike would increase with around 14 mm measured ca. under centre stand. Seat height would increase with about the same. Headtube angle would be 1° steeper. The reference photo is not mine and not my bike... |
