Hi all. For the last year I've had a modified Mk1 LeMans in the garage that I've been rebuilding for a friend. It has an exhaust sytem which looks like that included in the race kit. I'm now at the stage where I need to refurbish this but I'm reluctant to just whack it to get the remaining joint undone. The front pipes came away easily enough but the crossover stayed in one exhaust (it doesn't have an H pipe). Does anyone know how these were secured before I apply brute force? |

Them's Llafranconis, my LM had those. To answer the question – Yes, nothing, just an O-ring on each end. I kid you not. That must be rusted on, or perhaps it's got Gun Gum on it or a similar exhaust repair gloop. that's what I had to do when the O-rings burnt away. Can you imagine how long the O-rings lasted? |

Thanks Mike. That was pretty much my guess. No sign of any o-ring in the one that came apart. I'll heat up the joint then cool the crossover with a wet rag and see if that "cracks it". When I put it all back together I'll try silicone sealant which is what I generally use. Black stixall for a black system I think.

Hi,
Have had one of these 'sets' on my Le Mans for 25 years. The balance pipe was indeed 'held' by 'o' rings originally but these had a short life. Modified mine with slots on silencer stubs and exhaust clamps (Mikador) but it was always a bit rattly and leaky (although you couldn't hear it with engine runnning!). Very recently had system off (to remove slack baffle tubes in both silencers!) and have now welded stubs to both silencers and used a 4" X 1 1/2" exhaust sleeve(1.5" 38mm Exhaust Pipe connector sleeve with Clamps Joiner tube 1 1/2" adapter, Ebay) to connect the stubs under the gearbox , again with Mikador clamps. Much more solid and leak free! D
