Will any old 12V coil work?

Definitely should not leak or slosh.

Any replacement coil needs to have 3 ohms resistance.

My favorite is the Bosch Blue Coil (used in VW high performance applications) and is what I use on all Loopframe Guzzis. It is epoxy filled, so leaks and sloshing are not possible and vibration won't kill it like cheap oil filled ones. I had a US made Echlin brand oil filled coil fail after only a month.

The other coil I'd recommend is the Pertronix Flame Thrower.

New Bosch coil on its way, and it's blue!

I think the oil was also tracking along the core of the HT lead into the carbon brush on the distributor cap, then onto the rotor arm and neatly sprayed around the inside of the dizzy - one way of corrosion protection!

There are blue Bosch coils and there are Bosch Blue Coils - bit of difference. The former is oil filled, the latter is epoxy filled. As long as it's 3 ohms it'll work.

all fitted and working fine now!
I did find that the points were slightly different and made the ignition about 30 degrees too advanced, then I found I'd assembled the pulley with the timing marks in the wrong place - oops
