No, permanent magnet rotor, no maintenance required.

Can you not buy mail order from Gutsibits, or even Fowlers.

Sounds good, thanks Brian - just been on to Gutsibits and they can help, as opposed to the local dealer who appears to be in hiding.

Hi Ben, I don't mean to be funny, but you really are barking up wrong tree removing the front cover. For starters I'm not sure you'll even get the top screws out with the engine in situ... then there's the issue of sealing it all up again.

Far far easier to raise the rear wheel and rotate to your hearts content.  And DO use TDC for taking your measurements! The cam profile means you'll get an over-wide reading on the lowest part of the cam (opposite the lobe peak).

Incidentally you'll find the adjustment screw pitch is VERY coarse. Always measure the valve clearance with the locknut torqued up (8Nm), if it needs adjustment crack the lock nut loose and nudge the screw by a tiny amount and re-torque the nut. You'll soon get the feel for how much movement is needed.

Also, if you want to be pedantic, take up the pushrod/tappet slack by gently levering the rocker up against the adjacent valve spring cap - this squeezes excess oil from the mating surfaces and you get a more consistent measurement.

Good luck Thumbs Up
Pete.

+1 motopete
Can be done with side stand. Put steering on full lock tilt motorcycle till rear wheel is raised, put support under frame opposite side to frame. proceed with care.
Gentle reminder engine should be cold. Good luck.

Thanks motopete, that clarifies things nicely, I was intending to turn the engine via the alternator nut or whatever, and do whatever maintenance was required. Now I've found there's nothing to maintain, and I've a lifting jack on the way, I realise I can leave the front cover alone.
It took your post for the penny to drop though -- if I had one branch from every wrong tree I've barked up, I'd have next winter's firewood sorted.

I did proceed with care last time George, nice of you to mention the method,  but I was on my own, it was like wrestling with a buttered piglet, Spanish bricks are not the solid reliable British sort, and the ambulance doesn't come this far up the mountain.
I did once mend a rear puncture on my B33 at the roadside lifting the bike with a purloined fence post, but that was before I got old and bits started dropping off.
Now I do everything slowly except for falling.
