I replaced the clutch operating rod conical seals last year and all was well. Now oil is leaking past the rod enough to give a fair sized puddle. When I fitted them I was surprised at what an easy fit they were, not tight at all. I've read the arguments for and against O rings instead of conical. What about fitting 4 conical seals? There seems to be enough room for it.

Never had a major issue with conical seals bud, they have to be fitted correctly, I tried the o ring seals, was not happy with them at all

Which way do you fit them Ken? I think I fitted mine one each way, narrow ends facing each other.

Yes definitely something wrong there, the rod should be fairly stiff to move. In 30 odd years of owning big blocks, never had a clutch rod leak like this. |

Hmmm. I can't imagine that the rod tunnel should be worn. I wonder if Gutsibits might have had a dodgy batch of the seals. I'll order some more but maybe back them up with a couple of O rings. What do you more knowledgeable folk reckon?

The o ring trick was a recommended fix since way back when in Guzziology jerry. I'd go for it but i think they suggest using 6 .The guzzi cones always seem to weep after a while

Jerry, you didn't say wether the puddle was at the clutch housing end of the rod, or at the gearbox cover.
If it leaks at the front end, another possible culprit is the o-ring on the inlet shaft, that prevents the oil from migrating along the clutch center splines to the clutch housing... I just changed mine along with the bearing seal, it was no longer an o-ring but a dry piece of plastic that broke apart when I removed it

Many thanks for the answers chaps.
I read the old posts about o rings v conical seals, it's a bit like the which oil debate JPC, although I have a rattly bearing and a snatchy clutch I am used to it and can't face the big strip down at this time of year. The oil is definitely coming out of the rod/ back end. It has to be the quick fix for now.£££ |

Well, if it leaks at the back, the oil can't come from along the pushrod, as there's no oil at the other end !
Only the thrust bearing o-ring can be at fault, seems to me...
Or the selector o-ring, next to it, but that's inside the cover, unfortunately.
