Actually back in the late 60s, early 70s Norton Villiers were working on a new engine with Cosworth, which included counterbalance shafts. Never got past the prototype stage unfortunately.

Very true. Largely due to the aforesaid short-term management.

If you read Bert Hopwood's "Whatever Happened to the British Motorcycle Industry" along with a couple of others - Neale Shilton's book is good - you can see how our industry was destroyed.

Haven't read his book, but spent quite a few hours listening to his stories when he moved to Norton.
