Just took her out for a fast ride, kept the revs high, after a few miles, no smoke at all.  Pulled the plugs, and they are no longer black, just normal looking.  Snot is dripping out of the breather, so I'm again changing my mind, and putting this down to condensation, and the chokes.

I will pull the rocker cover though, and see if there is any obvious issues.

Thanks all.

I'm rather hoping I may have found the issue.  When I pulled the rocker cover, quite a lot of oil ran down the outside of the cylinder.

I park on a hill, and the oil is pooling at the back of the rocker box.  Would I be right in thinking that the drain hole is just below the exhaust rocker in the picture?

I'll park on the flat, and on the centre stand for a few days, and see if that improves matters, but would be interested in comments.  TIA

That's the one, and you'll find the same next to the inlet rocker on the opposite head.

However  you park it, it's normal for that amount to remain in the rockerbox after shutting off.
Of course parking horizontal results in best drainage, but it shouldn't be an issue unless the guides are excessively worn.
Some smoking on startup is not unusual even with good guides.

Have you checked the drain hole for blockages yet?

I have not, was looking down the pushrod tubes.  Will have a poke around in the drain holes.

If it helps, I just remembered if you leave a BMW boxer on its sidestand overnight you always get clouds of smoke out the left silencer at next start up. It's because the cylinder head is lower than the cylinder base so the rocker box can't drain. This is quite normal, mine did it for years, didn't do any harm.

Don`t know this engine but before condemning the valve guides I would check out the valve stem oil seals as these may be brittle with age and allowing the standing oil to pass into the combustion chamber.

I have a feeling that these don't have valve stem oil seals.  Perhaps someone more knowledgable can confirm?

I believe that big block engines had bronze guides with no oil seals and small block engines had cast iron valve guides with oil seals as a cost saving exercise.
Superior bronze guides are available for small blocks.
