hi does anybody have any recommendations for a nice shiny black paint that will give a similar look to a powder coated frame , getting ready to fit a Greg Bender loom and having a tidy up before it arrives. The battery tray is looking very tired and needs painting, cant justify the expense of powder coating as it wont get seen once its all back together also i need to touch up the drive shaft and some other small areas at the same time.
thanks Chris

I find Hammerite smooth does a good job takes a while to dry, loathe powder coat as any chip allows water to creep under and do lots of damage ...you can touch paint up. If you want a less expensive option Wilko do a straight to metal Gloss black and satin black works well follow tin instructions

Best thing for the battery tray is smooth Hammerite. It will do the swinging arm as well if you do it carefully but will probably not be as good as the factory finish. Careful brush painting with the sort of enamel paint that Halfrauds sell will give you a very good finish. Rattle cans just don't put enough paint on IMHO

Agree Hammerite smooth and good brush cheap brushes leave bristles, good thing about Hammerite is brush lines melt away as it cures

Hammerite smooth black assuming you want a satin finish, not gloss.

Rustins do one very similar.

I find that applying three thin coats of Hammerite gives a good finish with no runs.

Fair enough George, but it used to do it in one. They changed the formula some time back due to H&S concerns.

+1.  I used Hammerite smooth on a frame and was less than impressed. I wasn’t impressed by the Hammerite brush cleaner either.

"International" yacht enammel.
It goes on so smooth, leaving no brush marks, dries quick enough for handling, but does take a good week to reach full hardness and is then really tough.

I've been using Paragon coach enamel on my Norton. Lovely paint and gives a deep gloss finish. It's pretty tough as well after a week or so.

Unfortunately you have to buy 0.5 litre at a time. I've tried the Rustin paint and wasn't impressed.

I used POR-15 Top Coat (formerly Chassis Black) on my Convert and a few other bikes in the past. Applied with a foam brush it smooths out nicely. UV resistant, so stays looking good for a long time.
