Morning all

I have taken the alternator cover off the bike and am having a look inside. The reason for having a look is that the alternator light stays on rather longer than I would like it to when riding the bike.

I can see that the alternator brushes are about 10mm in length, but it is hard to judge how worn down this is, not knowing how long they were when new.  It all looks pretty filthy in there.

Should I replace them ?

And another thing. If I do replace them, will a regular household soldering iron be sufficient for fixing the wires into place or do I need something more beefy ?

Perhaps there is an alternative way of fixing the wires in place. if so could someone tell me ?

If replace these get it done by a specialist, no way will a domestic iron work, Guzzi charge a fortune for these, they are a Bosch part  look for a local Bosch Auto service place, the brushes are the same as BMW use in their older airheads and BMW are alot less than Guzzi ones It costs way less to have them fitted than to buy the specialist solder and soldering iron and and of course the skills to actually do the job

Thanks for that KGB. At about 10mm - do you reckon they need replacing or are there many more miles of happy motoring to be had on my stumps ?

The brush length when new is 17mm, and the minimum usable quoted as 7mm in my source.

Also note that the "normal" spring pressure is achieved with 1/2 turn preload for all models, but for the LeMans the preload is 1 full turn.

I have some spare pairs of BMW-origin brushes, part number is 21 31 1 244 480.

The alternator light issue could be something else, regulator, connexions ?

I  never solder them, though I have never replaced them on my guzzis I have done it a few times to BMW’s, you can buy them that have an eyelet on them, from motoworks.

Thanks guys for these super helpful comments. I too have seen brushes with eyes on them. They sound a good idea to me.

Do you have a link to the motoworks website you could put up ?

Maybe not the same, but I resoldered the brushes in a friend's Fiat alternator with an old screwdriver heated on a gas ring.

And I used to heat my apartment with flower pots stood upside-down over the cooking range, but we seem to grow more sophisticated with the years passing... Smile

I like that very much. Improvisation and versatility. The sure signs of a problem solving mindset.

Ian, that worked. So the ones I found were the 'Alternator brush set' number ELA44480 at a price of £5.30 inc VAT. And these will fit a LM1 right ?
