Hi thanks for adding me as a member, I am from Sydney Australia, just bought a 93 Cali III which is my first Guzzi for a while, previously had a LeMansIII until 1997 and regretted selling it ever since. The Cali came up on eBay and almost unintentionally bought it with what I considered a low bid, it seem like a good idea at the time as a way to get back with a Guzzi. Have plenty of other bikes in between with Triumphs, Velocettes, Kawasakis and Hondas in the garage at the moment. I am hoping for some help with getting the Cali back on the road, its only got 18,000 kilometres on the clock and this seems genuine as it's nicely preserved but brakes need a full going over as these do not work at all and the worst issue is there is no spark from the Digiplex 2S ignition. From what I can gather on the net, the Digiplex is a common problem, but I can't find any alternative ignitions to suit the 93 Cali with carbs. Hoping someone may have a solution. I have checked all the usual suspects - Kill switch, fuses, relays, connections, pickup (667 Ohms), no side stand cut out switch fitted but all to no avail, there is absolutely no spark, no power to the coils. So are any suggestions from those more knowledgeable out there in the forum as to what else can be checked and what a replacement may be in the worst case? It has the distributor mount blanked off with a plate, I have not been able to get this off at the moment (one screw has proved impossible to remove) and was wondering if anyone has converted this model back to use a distributor ? would the distributor drive still be there ? By converting back to distributor I would have a choice of electronic ignitions to use.

Welcome. Can't directly help with your question, but this wiring diagram might help trace any fault. You should be able to see why there is no power gettig through to the coils. I would be fairly certain that you could fit a distributor. The SPIII of the same year had one with the Motoplatt ignition, and Guzzi would not have made special parts for both.

To put on a distributor on this one will take quite a lot of work and cash I'd say.Firstly you need to open up the hole in the top of the crankcase casting and thread for the fixing bolts so the engine needs to be completely stripped.I think that your cam would have the drive gear on it but I'm not sure. Much more easy but not cheap either would be to install a crank /alternator mounted ignition system either by sachse ( I have two and am very happy with themn...https://www.elektronik-sachse.de/shopsystem-3/en/ ) or the older Silent hektik (https://www.silent-hektik.de/) |

Sorry ...just re read your post and it would be easier than I thought....probably no case machining needed. Same ignition systems should fit straight onto to alternator.

Thank you for the reply. The thought of using the distributor was a fallback solution if I could not get another easier replacement unit. I had seen the sache ignitions as a possibility from other posts, but links had only shown the model for Guzzis with the Bosch alternator fitted. Your link has shown a model for the Ducati alternator models and mine has a Ducati alternator. That should be a good solution. Thanks for the help.

The existing flywheel phase sensor is a standard item. I 'm sure there must be other generic electronic ignition modules which will work with it. I have distant memories of seeing something on Cliff Jefferies website about "my ignition" but can see no reference to it now, he only shows the ECUs.

Thanks all for your welcome and assistance, this morning I was ecstatic to have located a replacement ignition with the help of the forum and close to ordering the Sachse ignition but thought I would give it all another going over. This afternoon I found a broken wire to the relay which fixed the power to the coils and also found the side stand switch wound up and tucked away out of sight, the switch itself must have caused issues at some time and had been mig welded on the end presumably to seal it. but it still wouldn't spark so I removed this and crossed the wires, at this point I heard the relay click, but still no spark so I swapped over the relay and amazingly there was spark - A Christmas Miracle after 3 days of fiddling and checking. next up is to get the brakes working, but this may wait til after Christmas celebrations.

Those side stand switches are well known in Guzzi circles. They get full of crud and stop working. Just be careful not to ride off with the stand down. The brakes will be a whole new challenge but if you are stuck, I'm sure someone here will be able to help in some way.

Welcome, I am happy to see another person besides me resurrecting an older California model. Mine is a 1994 1100 carburated. Mine also has brake issues and I hope you will post what you do to yours. This is my first Guzzi and the rear linked braking system is a mystery to me, having never seen a setup like this before.

there is a guide how to bleed em in frequently asked qns the linked system is very good ...in a nutshell follow the hydraulic lines one front brake to master cyl and hand lever, the other front brake goes right back to a hydraulic valve usually mounted on rear frame near the left hand rear shock just behind side panel you will find the foot brake mast cyl behing right hand side panel it goes from there to the same splitter with a hose from there to rear brake stomp the footbrake it works front and rear disc in proportion ...the result is firm braking all weathers and stops diving. prior to ABS it was the most effective braking system out there ......well worth keeping on a Cali
