I have a 77 Le Man. Brake pedal has lost any pressure so I've ordered a MC kit and taken the master cylinder off. How does the piston come out? I can't see a circlip or any type of retainer.

There is no retainer, only a seal that's a push-fit.
You remove the piston by inserting a drift through the pressure side and gently tapping it out. Clean the cylinder with brake fluid only, and there should be a pouch of brake grease in the kit for reassembly.

There's actually like a dish shaped spring washer, virtually jammed in, like jpc said need to tap a rod through the outlet hole to drive the piston out, and the washer with it. Reassembly is the reverse, as they say, but in that case need a tube the right size to tap the washer back in. Preferably done holding the body in a vice. Watch it there's a coil spring in there as well. HTH |

Ping. Where the hell did that go. There is as Mike says, a retaining thin dished washer which is inserted into the bore to seal the piston and seals in place. Theoretically you should hit it with a correct size drift to expand it into pace and lock it in. |

It can be a good idea to put the open end in a plastic bag which reduces the chance of any small bits hiding in dark corners of your shed / garage / workshop.....

Thanks for the replies. I ended up tapping the piston and using a bolt to slide hammer it out after careful heat. It was well stuck in there! |

Tapping the piston for a bolt seemed to me a bit overly complicated, IIRC I bought a metre of 4mm steel rod from B&Q, cut a bit off and used that to drift it out from union end. Wasn't that difficult as I recall. YMMV |
