Junkyard Special vacuum brake bleeder, if you have a compressor. Just shorten the pickup tube, drill the top for the bleed, works like the real thing !

I found the best tool for that was a cheap vacuum pump from ebay.

Kombiman, does your wife know what you are using the chopping board for? Better get it in the dishwasher before she gets home

Tapping the piston for a bolt seemed to me a bit overly complicated, IIRC I bought a metre of 4mm steel rod from B&Q, cut a bit off and used that to drift it out from union end. Wasn't that difficult as I recall. YMMV |

Thanks for the replies. I ended up tapping the piston and using a bolt to slide hammer it out after careful heat. It was well stuck in there! |

It can be a good idea to put the open end in a plastic bag which reduces the chance of any small bits hiding in dark corners of your shed / garage / workshop.....

Ping. Where the hell did that go. There is as Mike says, a retaining thin dished washer which is inserted into the bore to seal the piston and seals in place. Theoretically you should hit it with a correct size drift to expand it into pace and lock it in. |
