Do you have access to a strobe?
Fit a timing disc and pointer marking TDC, then point the strobe at it while cranking, should be enough to show the spark point.

Have checked ignition timing. Correct static timing is 7 degrees BTDC actual reading is 53 degrees ATDC.
60 degrees out. Cutch housing connected to crankshaft with six bolts so must be one hole out. Time to remove engine for inspection. Brian thanks for timing idea, simple ideas the best. |

That would probably be your problem.
Crab the frame and pull the gearbox off the engine. Actually easier than you might think. |

Engine now out. Notch and slot on flywheel to clutch housing in correct position.
There are painted marks on crankshaft and clutch housing and yes they are one hole out The lesson learnt is presume everything is wrong when taking over an abandoned restoration and start afresh. Whilst out will renew worn clutch plate, replace weeping crankshaft seal in timing case and check timing chain assembly.

It was probably abandoned because the previous owner couldn't get it started.

Agreed Brian is a clever bugger.
Stupid me, have used timing disc when setting up ignition on old british bikes.
All parts cleaned up waiting for new parts to arrive. Whilst having a clean up noticed drain plug hole, sump plug, threads damaged, plug not holding tight. Sump off cleaned , waiting for helicoil. Good thing noticed when I did, not good to fall out when riding, |

So the timing problem was actually a good thing, you might never have noticed the sump plug otherwise.
