Ok time to change the aging front tyre on the lemans mark 1 and decided for some reason on new style avon roadrunner (may be to match the rear!).The issue is that once fitted its rubs on the mudguard.
Yes its says 100/90 (recommend) on the tyre and is seated properly but the actual profile measures 105 wide. Those 5 mm are key as there's not much clearance at the best of times.

So which tyres do you have fitted that are 100/90 and not 105/90.

I think Avon where trying to give us a bit extra rubber, when actually could done with less.

IMO proper front tyre for the LM is 90/90, the Avon one is 93 mm wide in the WM3-2.15 Borrani.

Old/new sizes:  3.00 to 3.60 is 90/90, 3.50 to 4.10 is 100/90, 4.00 to 4.25 is 110/90.

Recommended for the LM was 3.50 front, 4.00 rear.

If in the UK you put a tyre not in the manufacture recommended list it invalidates the insurance and makes the bike illegal to ride, funny we were having this discussion at my dealer as I was awaiting the MOT's ...Front Le Mans ought to be 110/90/18 .....Roadriders I tried they started nice but went off and white lined worse than any tyre I ever fitted, the older Road Runners were brill ...

I don't believe that is true at all. I'd be interested to see the Act of Parliament that states it.

Perhaps you could tell me what tyres I must have on my 1952 Norton?

How can you "ought to" fit a 110 if a 100 rubs on the mudguard ?

110 is the widest that fits in the swingarm, original specs certainly do not advise same size front/rear.

I have thousands of miles on Roadriders 110 RR and 90 FR, IMO just as good as Roadrunners.

Here, ultimately a judge, not the insurer, decides wether you've been negligent enough to invalidate your contract.

I presume it's rubbing on the sides that bolt to the forks?

I had to rub the insides of mine down with sandpaper. Was another Avon 100/90 18. (Not a Roadrunner)

The 110/90 Lasertec that my tyre man unilaterally decided to put on my rim instead of the 100/90 ordered is pretty tight ( although clear)to my mudguard.

If that had happened to me I would have thrown it back at him. Have you noticed the difference in handling?

What Ken said above is not completely true, but if you fit a different size of tyre from that specified by the manufacturer you could have insurance problems.

Certainly on my SPIII the larger front tyre made the handling atrocious.

Always.
Apart from this time.

I've quite a few commuting miles on it, fork and steering head bearing rebuild will help with the handling.

The handling problems I had were not steering bearing related. On low speed corners I had to fight to keep the bike from falling into the corner, pushing hard on the inside handlebar. Also at speed there was no preciseness about direction. Dropping to the 100/90 transformed the bike and made it an absolute pleasure to ride.

Does anyone have a bike in her/his shed fitted with a 3.50-18 tyre ?  (Dunlop K82...)

I'd be curious to know if the measures are closer to 90/90 or to 100/90.

While we are on with tyres sizes ,what do you lot think about reducing the tyre sizes on my 1100 Cali (1995 ) . the manual states 110/90-18 front and 140/80-17 rear .
The handling is a bit vague and it does fall into low speed corners with the narrow handle bars . slight handlebar shake is very evident on bumpy corners ,much worse than my old Cali 3, not dissimilar to a XLS 122 Sportster I had .it could be rear shocks which are original, but they are not leaking, and I can't afford new when my tyres will need a change in the next few months .

Leave it to the Germans to give you rigorous info:

OEM for LeMans mk1 -3.50 and 4.00 - corresponds most closely to 90/90 and 110/90.

What were the Cali III sizes?
My SPIII had a 120/90 18 rear. It the time I did compare specs with other similar models and they were the 100/90 front rather than the 110/90 I had (and which was in the spec).
Changing did make a world of difference to me, but obviously on a slightly different bike, who can say?
